Work has been steaming ahead at Mentone and Cheltenham this week.

No more pesky boom gate delays in Cheltenham, with Park and Charman Roads both reopened to vehicles and pedestrians this week.

The boom gates at Cheltenham and Mentone could be down for up to 49 minutes in the morning peak – causing delays and frustration for the 38,000 vehicles that travelled through these crossings each day. Without these delays, travelling around the area is now easier and safer for the local community.

Excavation of the rail trenches is now complete, with more than 74 Olympic-sized swimming pools of soil removed. Workers have started reinforcing the trench walls with 4,000 cubic metres of concrete. Once this is complete, we will lay the rail tracks and install new rail signalling.

Changes to the way you travel
Some of the road and rail disruptions in the area include:
Rail
  • Buses replace trains between Moorabbin and Mordialloc, and between Frankston and Stony Point until Sunday 26 July.

Buses also replace trains on other sections of the Frankston line throughout this time due to other project works.

Once the line reopens on Monday 27 July, a shuttle bus service will operate between Southland and Parkdale stations from Monday 27 July to Sunday 2 August and then between Southland and Mentone stations until Sunday 16 August to connect passengers to train services.

Road
Balcombe Road will remain closed until Tuesday 23 June. Vehicles can cross the rail line at the Bay Road, Park Road, Charman Road or Warrigal Road level crossings.

Additional road disruptions to be aware of include:

  • Como Parade East will remain changed to one-way traffic towards Warrigal Road until late July, with street parking temporarily removed and traffic management in place.
  • Local access only to Edward Street, Churchill Avenue and Stanley Avenue in Cheltenham while major works take place.
  • Street parking restrictions may be in place around worksites to allow for construction vehicle access. Refer to signage for the latest information.
Pedestrian and bus
During these road closures, pedestrian access will be unavailable at times and there will be changes to bus services. Detours are in place.

  • The Rogers Street pedestrian crossing will be temporarily relocated approximately 30m towards Warrigal Road, from Friday 12 June. Please refer to detour signage.
  • Bus stops in Mentone and Cheltenham will also be missed while works are on.
