We are now two weeks into our biggest ever level crossing removal construction blitz.

The heritage station buildings in Cheltenham have been carefully dismantled and safely stored away, while we work on confirming their final location and continue constructing the new station precinct.

Cheltenham and Mentone are both boom gate free and trench excavation is more than halfway. Approximately 100,000 cubic metres of earth from the construction site has also been dug out so far.

Works to construct a new signalised intersection at Balcombe Road are well underway. The roundabout on Balcombe Road will be replaced by a signalised intersection. This new intersection will feature a dedicated right-turn lane into Como Parade West, keeping traffic flowing and allowing pedestrians, cyclists and students to cross safely and easily.

Trains will be back up and running on Monday 27 July. The new Mentone Station will open on Monday 3 August, with the new Cheltenham Station opening on Monday 17 August.

Finishing touches on the stations and landscaping will continue until the end of the year. Carparking and works on the new 3.5km pedestrian and cycle path between Cheltenham and Mentone will continue until early 2021.

Changes to the way you travel
Some of the road and rail disruptions in the area include:
Rail
  • Buses replace trains between Moorabbin and Mordialloc, and between Frankston and Stony Point until Sunday 26 July.

Buses also replace trains on other sections of the Frankston line throughout this time due to other project works.

Once the line reopens on Monday 27 July, a shuttle bus service will operate between Southland and Parkdale stations from Monday 27 July to Sunday 2 August and then between Southland and Mentone stations until Sunday 16 August to connect passengers to train services.

Road
Park Road and Charman Road are both due to reopen next week to vehicles and pedestrians. You won’t notice any difference, but you’ll be walking and driving over the new rail trench. Balcombe Road will remain closed until Tuesday 23 June.

Additional road disruptions to be aware of include:

  • Como Parade East will remain changed to one-way traffic towards Warrigal Road until late July, with street parking temporarily removed.
  • Local access only to Edward Street, Churchill Avenue and Stanley Avenue in Cheltenham while major works take place.
  • Street parking restrictions may be in place around worksites to allow for construction vehicle access. Refer to signage for the latest information.
Pedestrian and bus
During these road closures, pedestrian access will be unavailable at times and there will be changes to bus services. Detours are in place.

The temporary detour path will open Friday 5 June after being closed from Tuesday night. The detour path closed to ensure the safety of pedestrians while we lifted the bridge beams in.

Bus stops in Mentone and Cheltenham will also be missed while works are on.
