Our biggest level crossing removal construction blitz started on Saturday night, and boom gates at Park and Charman roads were removed on Sunday morning. The Balcombe Road boom gates were removed the previous week when the road closed, meaning Mentone and Cheltenham are now boom gate free.

The remaining heritage Cheltenham Station building on platform one will be dismantled and safely relocated into storage, and the rest of the station demolished by this weekend. In eight weeks’ time, we will have dug the rail trenches, lowered the rail line under Park, Charman and Balcombe roads and built two new stations. That’s a lot of work to power through, and we are working around the clock to get everything done.

Trains will be back up and running on Monday 27 July. The new Mentone Station will open on Monday 3 August, with the new Cheltenham Station opening on Monday 17 August.

Finishing touches on the stations, car parking, landscaping and works on the new walking and cycling path will continue until the end of the year.

Your favourite businesses are still open for business. Thank you for supporting Mentone and Cheltenham traders while we continue to work.
Changes to the way you travel
Some of the road and rail disruptions in the area include:
Rail
  • Buses replace trains between Moorabbin and Mordialloc, and between Frankston and Stony Point until Sunday 26 July.

Buses also replace trains on other sections of the Frankston line throughout this time due to other project works.

Once the line reopens on Monday 27 July, a shuttle bus service will operate between Southland and Parkdale stations from Monday 27 July to Sunday 2 August and then between Southland and Mentone stations until Sunday 16 August to connect passengers to train services.

Road
Park and Charman roads in Cheltenham and Balcombe Road in Mentone are now closed while we work to build the new roads over the rail trench.

Additional road disruptions to be aware of include:

  • Como Parade East will remain changed to one-way traffic towards Warrigal Road until late July, with street parking temporarily removed.
  • Local access only to Edward Street, Churchill Avenue and Stanley Avenue in Cheltenham while major works take place.
  • Street parking restrictions may be in place around worksites to allow for construction vehicle access. Refer to signage for the latest information.
Pedestrian and bus
During these road closures, pedestrian access will be unavailable at times and there will be changes to bus services. Detours are in place.

Bus stops in Mentone and Cheltenham will also be missed while works are on.
